Self-Study vs. Live CPE: Which Should You Choose?
Most CPAs use a mix of live and self-study CPE. Understanding the trade-offs helps you pick the right format for each requirement.
Live CPE
Live programs — including webinars — happen in real time. You can ask questions, interact, and the format satisfies the "group internet-based" delivery method many boards prefer.
- Best for: staying current, ethics, complex updates
- Pros: interactive, engaging, often counts cleanly
- Cons: you have to show up at a set time
Self-study CPE
Self-study lets you learn on your own schedule, usually with a final exam to earn credit.
- Best for: flexible, on-demand learning
- Pros: do it anytime, pause and resume
- Cons: less interactive; some boards cap self-study hours
How to choose
If you value interaction and want to ask questions, go live. If you need flexibility around a busy schedule, self-study fills the gaps. Many CPAs anchor their year with live webinars and top up with self-study.
