How to Choose Quality Free CPE (Without Wasting Your Time)

Free CPE is everywhere, but quality varies wildly. If you're going to spend the hours, spend them on sessions that actually make you better at your job. Here's what to look for.

Look for practitioner-led content

The best sessions are taught by people who do the work — not professional course-readers. A presenter who handles real returns, audits, or advisory engagements will give you nuance and judgment you can't get from a slide deck.

Check the field of study

Make sure the session counts toward the requirement you actually need. A great ethics webinar doesn't help if you're short on technical hours. Reputable providers clearly tag each session's field of study.

Favor live and interactive

Live sessions let you ask questions and get answers specific to your situation. They also satisfy the "group internet-based" delivery method many boards prefer, and the engagement keeps you actually paying attention.

Confirm credit details up front

A trustworthy provider states the credit amount, field of study, and any accreditation status clearly — and reminds you to confirm acceptance with your state board. Vague promises are a red flag.

Build a simple system

Pick a couple of recurring, high-quality sources, calendar the sessions early in your reporting period, and keep your certificates in one folder. You'll never scramble in December again.
